Aerosmith transformed the song into a definitive band piece on PUMP with heavier elecric guitars and a noteworthy Joe Perry solo. Perry's solo enters at 2:30. His guitar tone is processed with a deep vibrato effect from a Leslie cabinet and his lines are appropriately melodic, in a George Harrison "Let Ot Be" sense, for this emotional power balled. The lines are based primarily on the F major pentatonic scale (F-G-A-C-D), with occasional deviations like the A passing tone in measure 3 and the B in measure 4, which occurs as a result of slurring a dyad passage. Check out the attractive interval jumps in measure 5 (octaves, fifths, and fourths) as well as the momentum-gathering ostinato lick that concludes the solo with a strong climax in measure 7. The sobbing string bends during the bridge (2:53-3:07) are a perfect example of Perry's musical word painting. Here, his singing, sustaining lines capture the emotional intent of the lyrics with a series of half-step bends that are struck and released after they are bent (pre-bent) for a depictive crying effect. Notice that they form a melodic sequence of root (C) released to the third (B) of the next chord (G major), and root (B) released to the third (A) of the final chord (F major).
