AOL Chat 5/3-2001

LiveStacie: We would like to give a big warm welcome to Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith.

Question: What convinced you both to take the production of "Just Push Play" into your own hands?

JoePLive: Well, when we first started writing the songs they were sounding so good we said why bother of going through the same old thing of learning the songs over again just to go into a studio. So we got in with our co-producers Marty Frederickson and Mark Hudson and gave it a shot.

Question: Did you get a positive reaction from your label when they heard that you would be producing yourselves?

StevenTLive: We've always let other people f-it up, why should they have all the fun?! We had heard that we were difficult to work with and we wanted to see if it was true and it was and I'll never work with me again! LOL

JoePLive: Well at first I think they thought

StevenTLive: At first I think they figured they weren't

JoePLive: they weren't going to get a record for two years anyway So let them have their fun. Then, when they want to get serious, they'll bring a producer in. And then we got them down there after we got about 6 songs done, to the Boneyard and gave them a listen and they didn't look back once after that.

Question: What's the story behind the cover art on "Just Push Play?"

StevenTLive: We thought for a long time about a lot of different concepts but they wouldn't fit on a CD cover and being fans of Sorayama and his cyber erotica in Penthouse we and M-80 picked this one. Or picked the cyborg Marilyn Monroe.

Question: Why do you think your music has appeal for multiple generations?

JoePLive: Well I think that it's because as each generation gets exposed to our music there's something new there that they like. And it's about good songs, and we're lucky enough to come up with one now and then.

StevenTLive: The diversity of the songs we write (the difference between Young Lust and Dream On and Train Kept a Rollin and Angel takes it from one end of the spectrum to the other.

JoePLive: The music defines Aerosmith, Aerosmith doesn't define the music. We play a lot of different styles so at one minute we can sound rap, one a countryish balad, so we do a lot of different things under the title of Rock and Roll.

LiveStacie: We have a lot of members asking about the Super Bowl..

Question: Who's idea was it for you to participate in this year's Superbowl halftime show?

StevenTLive: Alex Colletti from MTV called us up in the middle of mixing Just Push Play and told us that MTV was going to be involved in it. So we suggested dropping the stage down to six feet and we all agreed on bringing 5000 people out so it was in your face and take it to the people type show.

JoePLive: And then they also suggested *NSYNC with a couple guest stars, but the NFL realized they needed some credibility so they went to MTV and a rock show and that was our reason for joining up.

StevenTLive: And yes, it was a stretch to play with *NSYNC but isn't that what Aerosmith is all about?!

LiveStacie: Any comments about sharing the stage with Ms. Britney?

StevenTLive: As long as we could trade tee shirts when it was over I was ready for anything.

LiveStacie: AOL member Hansonshunnie asks...

Question: How does it feel being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Congrats!!

JoePLive: It feels a little out of place for us because we're still in the middle of doing this career that we have. And when I see people like Johnny Johnson getting inducted, they look like they should be there. But for us, we're still out in the middle of it, so it's kind of hard to make it feel right.

StevenTLive: When offered a room next to Elvis how can you say no?

LiveStacie: AOL member Denn020 asks...

Question: Is the new cd more like the "Classic Aerosmith" or the "Get a Grip Aerosmith"

StevenTLive: It's more like the classic Aerosmith. Because it was a band effort filtered through our own middle men. Us.

JoePLive: Well from the way that we recorded it and the way we got it done, it's definitely like classic Aerosmith. But as for the actual sound of it, it's hard for me to classify it as anything but brand new.

StevenTLive: Besides you always love the babies best.

Question: There's been talk of a world tour to promote "Just Push Play." Have any plans been solidified at this point?

JoePLive: Yes. We start in June and we'll probably be out on the road for two years. But before June, you can pick up the record which comes out tomorrow.

LiveStacie: AOL member WPCrknFlzy asks...

Question: Joe~I love hearing so many creative sounds on the new disc. What special effects do you plan on bringing to the live show? Have you or Brad added any new guitars to your collection since the NL tour?

JoePLive: I know Brad's got a couple of new Strats but I've added quite a few Grestch guitars among others. And as far as effects for live we'll be using the line 6 pedals. Which we used a lot of on the album.

LiveStacie: AOL member Stinkdog asks...

Question: This question for Steven Tyler. what is your favorite track from Just Push Play?

StevenTLive: Beyond Beautiful And the Hidden Line Somewhere Underneath the Rainbow

LiveStacie: And Joe do you enjoy doing the lead vocal songs?

JoePLive: Um, yeah. It was fun having it go through some strange effects. It was almost like the old Cooper Time Cube

LiveStacie: AOL member Tahlula528 asks...

Question: How many more years do you think that Aerosmith will keeping on playing together? Hopefully for along time. You guys are the best! Thanks for all the great music!

JoePLive: Until we change to "Walkers this Way"

StevenTLive: Until we totally change the lyrics to Walkers This Way! LOL

JoePLive: And then we'll still be going.

LiveStacie: What new band do you think is the "Aerosmith" of today?

JoePLive: I have to say STP I've always felt kind of had that eclectic gist of music that we have. STP is one of my favorites.

LiveStacie: I know the snow has kinda ruined your plans, but AOL member Roeroe727 asks...

Question: are you going to be at the virgin mega store in NYC TOMORROW?

JoePLive: No, not tomorrow.

StevenTLive: Not unless they can get the dogsleds here by tonight!

JoePLive: We'll make it up to them probably by next week. We're hoping we can do the instore then.

LiveStacie: Okay guys are you going to be on the Today Show this week?

JoePLive: ::checking schedule::

StevenTLive: Not this week but next week.

StevenTLive: Check out Aerosmith.com for our virtual 3-D site

LiveStacie: AOL member FireDiva7 asks...

Question: How will this next tour be different from the last two, considering the album was done completely done "in house"?

JoePLive: Well we'll probably end up playing more songs of the record than we ever did before.

StevenTLive: We can have bombs and blow-up dolls but it's better to keep my sex life out of this, LOL

LiveStacie: Okay we are just about out of time. Let's take one last question... Steven, is it true that you and your daughter have the same size jeans? Is this fact is fiction?

StevenTLive: Biologically speaking....yes You know what they say, small gloves, small hands.

LiveStacie: And with that fans we are gonna depart! Thank you so much Steven Tyler and Joe Perry for joining us this evening

JoePLive: Just like to say that the main thing is that the record is in the stores tomorrow. It's the only way you can get CD quality!

StevenTLive: There is seriously a 50 mph gale wind outside here in Boston that's keeping us from getting to you all we're really proud of this new record and we're coming at ya! Love from us all. Just Push Play

JoePLive: Hope you like it as much as we liked making it.

LiveStacie: Be sure to check out "Just Push Play" in stores everywhere tomorrow! And be sure to check out Aersmith facts and fun at keyword Aerosmith, they are the AOL Music Artist of the month for March. Enjoy and Good night!
